Destigmatize CTE: 3 Ways We Can Change Perceptions

  • This is a great article about how we need to change perceptions around Career Tech Education (CTE) in our schools. The article does explain the importance of changing these perceptions but then gives 3 ways we can change these perceptions. The first is to get students excited about CTE. Second is to get parents invested in the value of CTE and third is to turn educators into CTE advocates. This is a great article for all educators in all types of schools. After reading this article, what resonated with you the most?

The Journey Hart’s Ladder Resources

  • A couple of weeks ago, OCALI and Ohio Employment First held their monthly Journey series. This one was focused on Hart’s Ladder of Youth Participation. Along with the video, they shared this sheet of resources that aligned with the video. All five of these are good but be sure to check out bullets 3 and 4. The first is Ohio’s Self-Determination Association. This website not only defines, explains, and gives examples of terms such as self-determination and self-advocacy it also has multiple videos as well. The second link is from Indiana University and goes into detail about how to teach self-advocacy skills in your classroom. Both are great resources to use to teach these skills in your classroom.

Decision-Making Resources from the ARC

  • As we move closer to the end of the year more IEP teams are having their final meetings of the year, or even a student’s career. At these meetings, teams are having discussions about how to support their young adults as they move forward with their lives. The documents below from the Arc are great resources for teams to help families understand all the supports that are available to help students make decisions as they move into adulthood. These can be great for family engagement but can also be great independent goal activities for the IEP.
