Hi Everyone

This week we have 3 more resources that focus on the student-focused planning section of the Taxonomy of Transition Programming. The last resource is a really great informational document about families of students with disabilities. It also talks about how having a SWD impacts all the family members as well. Hopefully, you can find a few minutes to read through it. 

Student Focused Planning Resources 

Its My Choice

• This is a really nice resource for both students and those supporting students with disabilities. It briefly explains the what and the why of student-centered planning. After that, it asks students reflective questions such as who is important in your life, and what are some great things about you? Each section has multiple prompts to help the student reflect and then there is a space for the student to respond to these questions. This document can produce some great student-focused AATA data. 

Person Centered Thinking and Backwards Planning Guide

• This document was shared last year as well but it is such a great resource so it needed to be shared again. There are multiple questions to facilitate transition planning discussion. It also gives examples of answers to each question. It even has a backward plan filled in for an example student. This is a great tool to make sure a student has activities planned each year that will continue to move them forward to their goal. Here is a blank backward planning template as well if you would like to use it for a specific student. 

The Arc Build Your Plan Videos and Interactive Planning Guide

• This is a cool resource that includes videos of individuals talking about important parts of their transition planning such as where they will live and what to know about public benefits. The videos can be used as models for students to guide them in their answers. At the bottom of the video, page is an interactive planning guide. It will ask participants to answer multiple questions. From there it will generate a plan for them. One catch is you will need to create an account to access the planning guide. 

It Starts with Families

• This document was created in partnership between OCALI and Ohio Employment First. It provides research on contributing factors and impacts families with loved ones with disabilities face. There are also links to supporting resources as well. This document shows the impact of our outcomes on families and shows us yet another reason for successful family engagement in the transition process. Keep your eyes out for a planned professional learning experience for the Spring of 2022 to prepare local professionals to prepare, involve, and empower families of SWD as they transition from secondary education to adulthood.
