Transition Tidbits November 1, 2021

Hi Everyone

We are going to jump into the Program Structure section of the Taxonomy of Transition Programing. This section includes topics such as; program characteristics, program evaluation, strategic planning, policies and procedures, resource development and allocation, and school climate. We have 3 resources aligned to the program structure section. Our last link is a virtual college fair which is designed for all students but focuses on students with ID.

Ohio Longitudinal Study

  • In the program evaluation section of the Taxonomy there are alot of actions that talk about data analysis. One of the largest pieces of data we have is the Ohio Longitudinal Study. It shows trends across the state of students with disabilities who have exited. There is a lot of great data throughout the study and at the end they give 6 key findings after analyzing the data. Take a look and see what your key takeaways are and how those can relate to your program.

Guideposts for Success

  • Great document that can be used by students, families, and programs. Programs can use this document to try to include many of the guideposts in the services they offer. In the opening of this document it talks about the increasing employment opportunities for all, including those with disabilities. When structure our school programs using these guideposts we can increase the opportunities for our students with disabilities.

The Opportunity Myth

  • Some of you have probably seen this already but this is a great study to allow all programs to reflect on their structure to determine if it is truly meeting the needs of their students. This study talks about how we have been telling students that doing well in school will prepare them for their futures. This study points out multiple ways this statement can be considered a myth. This study focuses on 4 critical elements that should be included in programs, to avoid this myth. Definitely a good read and really allows for a great reflection.
