Transition Tidbits February 14, 2022

Hi Everyone

Hopefully, you are all well rested after the Superbowl and Valentine’s Day Weekend. This week we are only sharing two resources to help you ease into the week. They both align with the Student Development section of the Taxonomy of Transition Programming. Please make sure to see the upcoming events at the bottom as there are a lot of great ones coming soon, including the Ohio Graduation Pathways and Special Education which is being co-hosted by us and Region 9.

Success in the New Economy video

  • There might not be a better video to explain how important it is that we develop our students in school so they can be successful when they leave us. This short video compares learning skills vs going to college. It also talks about how one of these pathways may work for students but combining both pathways will help the student stand out and excel. The video does a great job of showing how important self-exploration and career exploration are and how they need to work together in order for our students to develop.

InfOhio Career Exploration and Planning

  • The video above talked about how important it is to have students do self and career exploration. This is a great resource that has many resources to help students do just that. It is organized into the stages of career development (Career Awareness K-5, Career Exploration 6-8, and Career Planning 9-12), which shows the importance of getting students started early. Some of the resources are also great pieces of informational text that can be embedded into lessons. This is a great way to engage students based on their Transition PINS in their ELA class. Resources also address many of the activities listed in the Student Development section of the Taxonomy. Some examples include work ethic, initiative, and helping students upgrade their skills.

Ohio Graduation Pathways and Special Education

  • We are very excited to partner with Region 9 to welcome Amy Szymanski, the postsecondary transition lead at ODE. She will be presenting on graduation pathways for students with disabilities. Please pass this on to anyone you feel may benefit. We are scheduled for a virtual session on Tuesday, February 22 from 3-4. Registration is required.

Charting the Life Course Tool for Transition Assessment and Planning

  • We have talked a lot about all the benefits of Charting the Life Course Tools. The Journey series will feature these tools and how they can be used for transition assessment and planning. This session will take place on Monday, February 28 at 2:30. It will also be recorded.
