Would you like to learn how to engage students in learning by using their special interests? Join this professional learning community for a FREE 5-session exploration of two OCALI Autism Internet Modules (AIM): Restricted Patterns of Behavior, Interests, and Activities and Using Special Interests in the Classroom. One of the primary characteristics of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is restricted and repetitive behaviors, interests, and activities. Individuals on the spectrum may display this characteristic through behaviors related to their special interests. These special interests can be a pathway to engagement and learning. Strategies and examples for incorporating strong interests into teaching will be shared through this virtual AIM study. AIM Author Bobby Huffman will be a part of this learning community.
Objectives:
Attendees will be able to describe perseverative special interests of individuals with autism
Attendees will be able to explain how special interests are more than just an interest or hobby to individuals with ASD
Attendees will be able to describe how to use special interests to teach new skills by tapping into the world of the individual with ASD, rather than expecting them to always tap into our world
Attendees will be able to explain that special interests don’t have to be viewed as something negative and that we should not try to extinguish the interest
Attendees will be able to explain that special interests can often unlock hidden potential and increase engagement
Bobby Huffman Bio:
Bobby Huffman is an intervention and behavioral specialist for Jones Middle School in the Upper Arlington school district. Throughout his teaching career, Bobby has worked with children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) ages 18 months to 12 years old in both the school and home settings using special interests to increase learning opportunities. Bobby received his master's degree in applied behavior analysis at The Ohio State University where he published research on using special interests in classroom settings. In addition, Bobby is a part-time research assistant for the Ohio Center for Autism and Low Incidence (OCALI).

One graduate credit is available for purchase through Ashland University. The assignments are as follows: thoroughly read two OCALI modules entitled, Restricted Patterns of Behavior, Interests, and Activities and Using Special Interests in the Classroom, complete and fulfill all requirements of a Reflection and Application Response Journal on the assigned modules, and attend and participate in the five zoom webinar session listed above.
