My Child, My Connection 3-Part Virtual Learning Series March 15 or 17, April 12 or 14, May 10 or 12, 2022 Linda Bass-Johnoff, MEd and Lyn Ayer, PhD You are invited to participate in a virtual three-part learning series, My Child, My Connection, designed for parents, caregivers, educators, and early intervention providers. Information and strategies will be provided in each session by Linda Bass-Johnoff and Dr. Lyn Ayer. Both Linda Bass-Johnoff and Dr. Ayer currently work as consultants for the Ohio Center for Deablind Education. Linda has experience in Early Intervention/Early Childhood, and Lyn has been in the field of deafblindness for over 25 years. Professional Learning Series Description: This year’s My Child, My Connection series is a continuation of the 2020 series that described early intervention measures to enhance the sensory system of a child who is deafblind and may have additional challenges. In 2020, Sessions 1, 2, and 3 focused on the contact senses of touch, taste, and smell; and the power senses of proprioception and vestibular. Recordings of the 2020 My Child, My Connection sessions are available on the OCDBE website at www.ohiodeafblind.com. This year, Sessions 4, 5, and 6 of the 3-part virtual learning series, My Child, My Connection, focus on residual hearing and vision, multi-sensory strategies to foster relationships and active learning, and multi-sensory experiences to enhance and encourage early literacy. A description of each session, dates, and times are provided below. Please note: Session 6 includes an additional half hour in order to share materials and provide time for discussion. Participants may register for one or more sessions. Participation in this year’s sessions is open to all interested persons; participation in the 2020 sessions is not required. Contact hours are available to participants who complete the session evaluation. Closed captioning and sign language are available upon request. Session 6: My Child, My Connection: Multi-sensory experiences and environments to enhance early literacy Dates/Times: May 10, 2022 1:30-3:00 pm (ET) or May 12, 2022 4:00-5:30 pm (ET) Description:Session 6 looks at how a multi-sensory approach to early literacy is critical for children who are deafblind and who may have additional challenges. The additional half hour of this session will be used to share materials with participants and for discussion. Learning Outcomes: Participants will understand that: 1. Lliteracy is for all children 2. Literacy development begins with connections and trust 3. It is critical to be proactive in creating and enhancing materials to INCLUDE ALL SENSES
