Transition Tidbits May 17, 2021

Hi Everyone

Well, it is hard to believe but this will be our last Transition Tidbits for this school year. Thank you to all of you for your outstanding work this year to prepare your students for their post-secondary options. It has been a pleasure to work with and learn from all of you.

Below are a few links to check out as well as our Regional Transition Networking dates for next year. Please feel free to pass these meeting dates onto anyone that may benefit. The larger our network gets the more opportunities we have to learn from one another and in the end have a greater impact on our students. As we get closer to the events we will have more information about how to register for our meetings.

  • I’m Determined

    • We all know how important self-determination is to our students with disabilities. The more a student is self-determined the better their postsecondary outcomes. With that in mind, this website is focused on helping educators and parents make their students more self-determined. There are resources that talk about the critical decisions a parent must make as students grow. Parents also have access to modules to encourage self-determination at home and at school. There are also some great resources such as the six elements of self-determination or the one-pager of student data to measure self-determination.

  • National Parent Center on Transition

    • This is a huge website with so many great resources. There are a ton of videos on a variety of topics such as employment, self-determination, self-advocacy, and more. They even have libraries of videos on similar topics, such as the soft skills to pay the bills series. Most of the videos are short and should be able to hold the student's attention. There is also a learning center that covers a wide range of topics for parents such as supporting your child in high school and helping them prepare for employment. This is a great resource to engage families and help them prepare their children for their post-secondary life.

    • Below is a sublink from this site which has video resources about different pathways to employment for students.
