Transition Tidbits March 21, 2022

Hi Everyone

This week we are going to continue in the Family Engagement Section of the Taxonomy of Transition Programming with our first resource. We also shared a couple of great videos which show how effective transition planning in school can truly lead to great post-school outcomes for them. Please make sure to check out another event about Charting the Life Course.

Center for Parent Information and Resources

  • This is a great resource that really aligns well with the Family Empowerment subsection. We sometimes forget how overwhelming an IEP meeting can be for families. This resource is full of great resources to empower families so they can better understand the process which will allow them to be active participants in the development of their child’s IEP and transition planning. Some specific sections to check out are below but please take the time to browse the whole site.

Tim’s Place

  • Great video shared by Svetlana in our office. This video is about an individual with Down’s Syndrome who owns his own restaurant. What a great example of setting high expectations, engaging families, and using person-centered planning leading to successful post-school outcomes. Side note, there were other linked videos about Tim and in one of them, it mentioned how his original restaurant had to close because he was moving to Colorado with his girlfriend… where he wanted to open a restaurant there as well.

AT to Drive

  • Another video is similar to Tim’s. This one shows how this individual uses Assistive Technology to drive. Again, this is another example of how we can impact post-school outcomes with successful post-secondary transition planning. We would love to hear your thoughts on both of these videos. Feel free to leave a sticky note on our Jamboard

Charting the Lifecourse Action Group

Great networking event for anyone who works within a school who is using the framework and tools and wants to learn, exchange ideas, feedback, advice, or tips, and think about new and exciting ways to apply the framework and tools of Charting the LifeCourse
